The Short Answer
Yes, you can drink alcohol in a limousine or party bus in Illinois — but only if the vehicle meets specific requirements under state law.
What Illinois Law Actually Says
Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/11-502.1) creates an exemption from the open-container rules for chartered vehicles. The key conditions:
- The vehicle must be a "chartered transportation vehicle" — meaning it's hired with a driver for a set period, not a taxi or rideshare.
- Passengers must be at least 21 years old to consume alcohol on board.
- The driver cannot consume alcohol — ever, full stop.
- The vehicle must not be stopped on a public roadway while alcohol is being consumed (this is rarely enforced but technically on the books).
A licensed limousine or party bus from a professional operator qualifies. A friend's sprinter van does not.
What This Means in Practice
When you book a limo or party bus through Royal Carriage:
- Alcohol is allowed for passengers 21+
- We do not supply alcohol — you bring your own (BYOB)
- The vehicle has a bar area with a mini-fridge and stemware
- We stock the ice; you stock the bottles
- Our chauffeur will not consume alcohol under any circumstances
What You Can Bring
No restrictions on type — wine, champagne, beer, liquor all work. Most groups bring:
- Champagne or prosecco for toasts
- Pre-mixed cocktails in a sealed container
- Beer in a cooler (the bus has built-in ones)
Avoid glass bottles that can roll or break — use plastic cups or the provided flutes.
Age Verification
Everyone drinking must be 21+ — that's on the person booking the ride, not us. We don't card passengers — that's not our role — but we won't knowingly allow minors to drink on board. If you have a mixed-age group (say, a quinceañera or sweet sixteen), let us know when booking. Alcohol consumption simply won't happen on those rides.
Chicago-Specific Rules
City of Chicago doesn't add restrictions beyond state law, but:
- Open containers are illegal outside the vehicle — don't exit the party bus with a drink
- Wrigleyville and Wicker Park: some blocks have enforcement for visible alcohol near the vehicle
- Soldier Field and United Center events: stadium policies prohibit re-entry with alcohol, but that's the venue's rule, not a limo rule
Drinking and Driving — The Obvious Part
Your chauffeur is a CDL-licensed professional with a zero-tolerance alcohol policy. That's the point of hiring a driver. You get to drink; they don't. It's a clean arrangement that eliminates any drunk-driving risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you drink on a limo bus to O'Hare? Yes, but we'd recommend waiting until after your flight. Most airport runs are early morning anyway.
Can the driver stop at a liquor store? We can arrange a stop if you need to pick up supplies on the way. Just note it when booking.
What if someone under 21 is in the group? They ride with you — just no alcohol for them. The vehicle itself is legal; only the drinking has an age requirement.
Do you provide alcohol? No. BYOB only. We have ice, bar equipment, and glasses.
Book a Party-Ready Vehicle
Our party buses seat 12–30 guests and are fully equipped for a night out. Stretch limos hold 6–12 and are great for smaller groups.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you drink alcohol in a limo in Chicago?+
Yes — passengers 21+ can legally drink alcohol in a chauffeured limo or party bus in Illinois under the chauffeured-vehicle exemption (625 ILCS 5/11-502). The chauffeur cannot drink. Open container in the front passenger area is illegal. Beverages must stay in the rear cabin.
Is it legal to drink in a party bus in Illinois?+
Yes for 21+ passengers in the rear passenger cabin, no for the driver or anyone in the front. Illinois law treats chauffeured party buses the same as limos under 625 ILCS 5/11-502. Some municipalities (e.g. Naperville) require the operator to display chauffeured-vehicle license plates.
Can minors be in a limo where adults are drinking?+
Legally yes, but every reputable Chicago limo company requires a signed waiver and at least one sober adult chaperone if anyone under 21 is in the vehicle. Royal Carriage's policy: no alcohol service if any rider is under 21, even with parental consent.
Can I bring my own alcohol to a Chicago limo?+
Yes — most Chicago limo companies including Royal Carriage allow BYOB. Bring sealed bottles only. We provide ice, glassware, and a cooler at no charge for trips $300+. Open containers must be opened inside the vehicle, not transferred from outside open containers.
What happens if you spill alcohol in the limo?+
Royal Carriage charges a $200 cleaning fee for minor spills (carpet, leather), $400 for severe spills requiring detail. Vomiting or biohazard cleanup is a $500 flat fee. These fees are charged to the credit card on file at trip end, with photo evidence sent via email.
Can the limo make stops to buy alcohol?+
Yes — chauffeurs can pull up to a liquor store mid-trip. Standard hourly billing continues during the stop. Most popular: a 10-minute Binny's stop on Clark or Halsted before a Wrigley game. The driver does not enter the store; one rider runs in.
