Getting Around the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast sits between North Avenue and Oak Street, hugging the lakefront from Lake Shore Drive west to Clark. It's greystone mansions, the Astor Street historic district, and the high-rises along the Drive. Most of what we run here is dignified and routine: a resident heading to a board dinner, a couple going down to the Lyric Opera, or a guest checking out of the Drake or the Waldorf Astoria for an early flight. The streets are narrow and one-way through the Astor district, so our drivers know which corners actually let a sedan idle without a ticket.

Dining and shopping are the daily anchors. Rush Street and Bellevue feed the steakhouse and supper-club crowd — Gibson's flagship is right at Rush and Bellevue — and Oak Street is the luxury-retail row where we drop and circle for shoppers working their way down to the boutiques. Hotel work is constant: the Drake at the top of Michigan Avenue, the Four Seasons and the Waldorf a few blocks south, and the Thompson on State. Drivers know each one's chauffeur lane and which door the doormen prefer for a quiet handoff.

Lake Shore Drive is both the scenic route and the fast one — it's how we keep airport timing tight, exiting at Belmont or Fullerton to dodge the Loop. O'Hare from the Gold Coast is a flat $130 sedan, Midway $130, and we add cushion when the Drive floods or a marathon closes it. The trips residents book most are standing O'Hare departures, evening runs to the Symphony Center and Lyric, and gala arrivals at the Field Museum and Art Institute, where a chauffeur on a Net-30 account beats hunting for valet in formal wear.
