The three branches of the river run past the densest collection of notable towers in the city — Marina City's corncob towers, the Merchandise Mart, Wacker Drive's wall of glass, and the Riverwalk below. Marina City & River North
Bertrand Goldberg's 1960s Marina City towers remain the most recognizable silhouette on the river. The surrounding River North blocks add the contrast between mid-century concrete and recent glass that makes the area a quick lesson in how the skyline grew.
Mies van der Rohe in the Loop
The Federal Center plaza and the IIT campus on the South Side hold the city's clearest run of Mies's steel-and-glass minimalism. The campus, about 15 minutes from downtown, is a stop most visitors never reach without a car.

The most popular plan pairs the water and the street. We drop your group at the Chicago Architecture Center or the Wendella dock on Wacker Drive for a river boat tour, wait, and pick you up when the cruise ends. From there the car covers what the boat cannot reach — the Rookery lobby, the Federal Center, and the Loop towers on foot with the vehicle staging nearby.
The five-hour Full Architecture Day extends west to Oak Park for the Wright homes and Unity Temple, then loops back through the South Side for the IIT campus and Prairie Avenue. Because the vehicle stays with you, the order is yours to set: lead with Oak Park in the morning to beat crowds, or save the river for the late-afternoon light. Stops are not metered, so lingering at a building you love does not change the rate.

A sedan suits a couple or a pair of design enthusiasts who want to move quickly between buildings. The Cadillac Escalade fits a family or a small group of four to six with room for camera bags. Timing matters for this tour more than most. The river boat operators run spring through fall, so a boat-plus-drive day works best from roughly April to November; in winter we shift entirely to driving routes and indoor stops like the Rookery lobby and the Cultural Center. Morning light favors the east-facing river facades, late afternoon flatters the Loop towers, and Oak Park is quietest on weekday mornings. We build the day around the season and the light rather than a fixed script.
