Getting Around Downtown

Downtown means the Loop and the districts ringing it: the theater row on Randolph, the financial blocks around LaSalle, Millennium and Grant Park on the lakefront, plus Streeterville and South Loop. The Loop's grid is one-way and the bus-and-bike lanes shrink the curb, so the trick downtown is knowing which corners let a sedan pause without a ticket and which garages actually have a quick exit. Most of our downtown work is timed and transactional: a theater drop on Randolph before the curtain, a hotel pickup for an early flight, a conference run between McCormick Place and a Loop hotel.

The theaters drive a big share of evening bookings, the Cadillac Palace, the CIBC, the Nederlander, the Chicago Theatre. Where everyone arrives and leaves in the same 20-minute windows and a pre-arranged pickup beats the post-show scramble for a ride. Millennium Park and the Art Institute pull event and gala traffic; the Symphony Center and the Lyric down on Wacker are standing date-night and subscriber runs. Weekday demand is executive: pickups at the Loop hotels and the financial-district towers, plus airport departures for business travelers.

For airports, downtown has the most route options, Lake Shore Drive and the Kennedy for O'Hare, the Eisenhower or Lake Shore south for Midway: so we pick by time of day, $120 to O'Hare and $120 to Midway. As the most-booked area in our coverage, downtown sees the full mix, but the trips clients book most are theater-night transport, Loop hotel airport departures, and executive pickups in the financial district.
