Watching the River Dyeing

Dyeing the Chicago River green is the city's signature St. Patrick's Day tradition, running since 1962. On the Saturday closest to the holiday, the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local 130 boats out onto the main branch of the river around 9:00 am and release a powdered dye that turns the water a vivid green for hours. The best viewing is along the Riverwalk and from the bridges between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive, with Upper Wacker Drive giving a clear look down at the water.

Crowds for the dyeing build before sunrise, and the streets right around the river — Wacker, Columbus, and the bridges themselves — see rolling closures and dense foot traffic. We drop your group near the Wacker and Michigan area before the boats launch so you get a riverwalk spot, then your chauffeur stages nearby instead of you trying to re-park or summon a ride in a crowd that fills the entire river corridor. From there, the rest of the day flows directly into the parade and the bars.

Downtown and the South Side

Chicago runs more than one St. Patrick's Day parade. The downtown parade follows the river dyeing, marching up Columbus Drive through Grant Park from Balbo to Monroe around noon. Columbus closes for the route, and the streets feeding it stay congested through the early afternoon. Our chauffeurs know that closure footprint and use alternate approaches to get your group to a viewing spot, then collect you for the next stop without sitting in barricaded traffic.

The following weekend, the South Side Irish Parade rolls down Western Avenue through Beverly and Morgan Park — a neighborhood tradition that is more block party than downtown spectacle, with families lining the route for blocks. Groups that want the full Chicago Irish experience sometimes book both: the downtown river-and-parade day one weekend, and the South Side parade the next. Tell dispatch which one you're targeting so the driver plans around the right set of closures.

Bar Transport for the Busiest Day

St. Patrick's Day is the single busiest day of the year for our party buses, and for good reason — once the parade ends, the city becomes one long bar crawl. River North, Wrigleyville around Clark Street, and Lincoln Park all run wall-to-wall, and the West Loop and Old Town fill in behind them. A party bus or stretch limo lets your group move between four to six bars over five to six hours with a sober chauffeur at the wheel, cooler space on board, and no one stuck as the designated driver.

This is also the day rideshare pricing gets ugly. With several hundred thousand people downtown in green, surge multipliers climb and pickup points become chaos. A flat-rate vehicle booked weeks ahead sidesteps all of it: the price is locked, the driver waits at each stop, and the whole crew ends the night in one vehicle headed home rather than splitting cabs at bar close. Book three to four weeks out — the 20- and 40-passenger buses sell out first, and there is a five-hour minimum on the holiday itself.

St. Patrick's Day Questions

How early should we book for St. Patrick's Day?

Book at least 3-4 weeks out. St. Patrick's Day is our busiest single day of the year for party buses. The 20-passenger and 40-passenger buses sell out first. We take reservations starting January 1.

Can the party bus do a bar crawl with multiple stops?

That is exactly what it is built for. You give us a list of bars or a neighborhood (River North, Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park) and we drive you stop to stop. Most groups hit 4-6 bars over 5-6 hours. Your chauffeur waits at each stop.

What about road closures on St. Patrick's Day?

Columbus Drive closes for the parade and several streets near the river close for the dyeing ceremony. Our chauffeurs know the closure map and use alternate routes. We have driven St. Patrick's Day in Chicago for 10 years — we know every open street.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★

Got the party bus for my daughter's prom group. 22 kids, music at a reasonable volume, every stop on time, driver texted updates all night. As a dad that peace of mind was worth more than the bill.
