Chicago limo driver tip: 15-20% of fare ($20-$26 on $120 ride, $105-$140 on $700 charter). Royal Carriage builds 15% gratuity into the rate, no separate tip required. Extra cash $20-$50 (or $50-$150 for weddings) appropriate for exceptional service. Tip on pre-tax amount. Cash preferred over card. Don't tip per hour, tip on final total.
Chicago Limo Driver Tip by Service Type
Royal Carriage booking
$0 expected15% gratuity built into the hourly/flat fare. Driver receives the full gratuity from your invoice. Additional cash welcome but never expected.
Most other Chicago operators
15-20% of fareCash or app-tip at end of service. Standard 18% for routine service, 20% for excellent service. Tip on the pre-tax fare, not the total.
Airport flat-fare transfer (other operators)
$15-$30 cashOn a $120 sedan transfer: $26 (20%) is the norm. SUV at $140: $33 cash. Sprinter at $280: $68. Hand directly when driver helps with luggage.
Hourly charter (other operators)
15-20% of totalOn a 4-hour wedding at $700: $105-$140 cash. Hand to driver at end of service. Don't tip per hour, tip on final invoice total.
Wedding day (any operator)
$50-$150 extraOn top of built-in gratuity, an additional $50-$150 cash for the chauffeur is customary if service is exceptional. Best man or groom typically handles this discretely.
Bachelor/ette night (any operator)
$30-$75 extraExtra cash for handling late-night cleanup, mid-trip stops, or rowdy guest dynamics. Pool $5-$10 from each rider in the group.
Multi-vehicle event
$30-$50 per driverEach driver gets their own envelope. Don't pool tips across multiple drivers. They don't share. Cash envelopes labeled with driver name and vehicle.
Weather emergency / problem-solving
$50-$100 extraDriver navigated a snowstorm, helped change a flat tire, or resolved a routing crisis. Extra cash recognizes that 'going beyond' isn't covered in baseline gratuity.
When You Should NOT Tip Extra
Tipping is recognition of good service. Don't tip extra in these situations.
Chicago Tip by Fare Amount
When gratuity is not already built in, here is the 18-20% standard by fare size.
| Pre-tax fare | 18% tip | 20% tip |
|---|---|---|
| $120 | $23 | $26 |
| $120 | $23 | $26 |
| $140 | $30 | $33 |
| $548 | $99 | $110 |
| $700 | $126 | $140 |
| $1,000 | $180 | $200 |
Tip on the pre-tax fare, not the invoice total. On a Royal Carriage booking, 15% gratuity is already in the rate, so these figures only apply to operators that charge gratuity separately.
Why the Tip Matters to the Driver
A professional chauffeur is not a rideshare driver between pings. They arrive early to stage the vehicle, clean it before and after your trip, plan the route around traffic and construction, and stay with you for the full booking. Gratuity recognizes that work. It is a real part of how the role is compensated, not an optional extra you decide on a whim.
That is also why cash tends to reach the driver more directly. Cash handed at the end of service goes straight to the chauffeur. A card-added tip runs through the operator's payroll, often a week or two behind, and is sometimes processed differently than people expect. If you want the full amount to land with the person who drove you, cash is the cleaner path.
None of this means you should feel pressured. If gratuity is built into your rate, the driver has already been paid fairly and no extra is expected. Additional cash is purely a thank-you for service that went beyond the booking.
Tipping for a Group Booking
Pool it before the trip
For a bachelorette or birthday party bus, collect $5-$10 per person up front and hand the driver one envelope at the end. Trying to settle a tip while everyone is scattering at 1am rarely works. One envelope per driver on multi-vehicle days
Weddings often run several vehicles. Each chauffeur gets their own labeled envelope, drivers do not pool tips with each other. Tip every driver who served your group. The organizer usually handles it
Whoever booked and paid is the natural person to handle the group tip. For weddings, the best man or a parent often covers it discreetly at the end of the night.Add for the hard nights
Late-night cleanup, multiple unscheduled stops, or managing a rowdy group are exactly the situations an extra $30-$75 recognizes. One Price. No Awkward Tip Math.
We build 15% gratuity into the hourly and flat fares. The price you book is the price you pay, no awkward end-of-ride math, no expense-report complications, no question about whether the driver was paid fairly. Drivers receive the full built-in gratuity. See our pricing guide or hourly rates for full breakdown.
Limo Driver Tipping, Common Questions
Real questions, no judgment
Standard tip: 15-20% of the fare. On a $120 airport sedan: $20-$26. On a $700 wedding-day stretch limo: $105-$140. Tip the full amount once at the end of service, in cash if possible. Royal Carriage builds 15% gratuity into the rate so no separate tip is required.
Depends on the operator. Royal Carriage builds 15% gratuity into the hourly/flat fare (no separate tip line). Most Chicago operators charge gratuity as a separate 18-22% line on the invoice, verify before paying. Asking 'is gratuity included?' before booking is the surest way to know.
Pre-tax. Tip on the service fare itself, not on Illinois sales tax (which is just government money you're passing through). On a $100 fare with $10 tax = $110 invoice, tip 18% on $100 = $18.
If gratuity is built in, you can't 'reduce' it. It was paid as part of the rate. Instead, contact dispatch within 24 hours, document specifics (driver name, time, what went wrong), and request a partial refund of the gratuity portion. If gratuity is on top of the fare and service was poor, you can choose to tip 10% instead of 18-20%, but report the issue regardless.
No, tip on the final total, not per hour. A 6-hour charter at $159/hr = $954 total. Tip 18% = $172 once at the end. Tipping hourly creates math complications and isn't industry standard. The driver receives the same total tip either way.
Cash, ideally. Drivers receive 100% of cash tips immediately. Credit card tips go through the operator's payroll system, often delayed 1-2 weeks and sometimes split with dispatch. If you must use card, ask the driver if they prefer cash for the tip portion specifically.
Optional. If 18-20% is built into the wedding package, no additional tip is required. If service was exceptional (driver helped with bridal logistics, navigated photo timing, handled an emergency), an extra $50-$150 cash from the groom or best man is appropriate. Hand it discretely at end of service.
Whoever paid for the booking is responsible for the gratuity-built-in tip. If extra cash is given for exceptional service, the bride or groom typically handles it as a personal thank-you, but parents often add their own. There's no rule. The driver is grateful for cash from anyone.
