The Displays, Up Close

Lincoln Park Zoo Lights is the anchor of most tours — a free-to-walk (ticketed on peak nights) trail of light installations through the zoo, best enjoyed on foot while the chauffeur waits at the entrance. Downtown, the Daley Plaza Christmas tree sits beside the Christkindlmarket, Chicago's German holiday market, where the wooden stalls and the tree make a natural first stop. The Magnificent Mile carries its own lighting along Michigan Avenue, with the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower lit nearby. For sheer residential density, Sauganash's "Candy Cane Lane" on the Northwest Side is the most decorated block in the city, and Skokie's "Chestnut Court" runs a close second in the suburbs. We slow-cruise the residential streets and pull over for photos where it's safe to stop.

Timing Your December Night

Light displays generally run from mid-November through the first week of January, and the sweet spot is a clear evening after dark — in Chicago's winter that means tours can start as early as 5:30pm. Weeknights in early and mid-December are the calmest, with shorter waits at Zoo Lights and easier downtown parking. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year's Eve are peak demand and the premium vehicles sell out two to three weeks ahead, so set your date and book early. If you're building a tour around Zoo Lights on a Friday or Saturday, buy those admission tickets in advance — they sell out independently of your limo booking.

Dress for Walking, Ride Warm

The drive-by and slow-cruise portions happen inside a heated cabin, but the best stops — Zoo Lights, the Christkindlmarket, a decorated block you want to walk — mean stepping out into a Chicago December. Dress in layers and warm footwear, especially for kids. Each tour includes hot cocoa or mulled cider to come back to between stops, and the vehicle stays warm while you're out. For tours with toddlers we recommend the Sprinter for its interior room and easier stroller and booster-seat handling; we provide booster seats with 24 hours' notice.

Picking the Right Vehicle

A couple or a small family fits the Escalade and keeps the per-night cost lowest. A larger family or two households together ride the Sprinter, which holds twelve with room for the cocoa and the coats. Multi-family groups and big celebrations take the party bus — up to twenty, with the lowest per-person cost of any option — and couples marking an anniversary or proposing often book the stretch limo for the occasion rather than the headcount. Snow is normal and tours run in it; we only reschedule for blizzard or ice-storm warnings, at no charge. Tell us the neighborhoods and the time, and dispatch builds the route.
